Letter from MPP Hardeman to Premier Wynne re jobs at CAMI plant
January 27, 2017
Hon Kathleen Wynne
Premier of Ontario
Legislative Bldg, Rm 281, Queen’s Park
Toronto ON M7A 1A1
Dear Premier Wynne,
As you know, today the CAMI plant in Ingersoll announced that up to 600 people will be laid off as of July. This comes shortly after Maple Leaf Foods announced that they will be closing their turkey processing plant in Thamesford by 2018, a loss of another 400 jobs.
Each of these on their own is a significant blow to our community and the families that depended on these jobs; combined, it is a huge impact on our local employment.
I ask you to take action to ensure that there are sufficient supports available for the workers to assist them not only in their job search, but also with any retraining they may require. To address these job losses we need government ministries working together to look at ways to assist the people of Oxford in the most expedient manner.
Premier, there have been too many plant closures in recent years and not enough announcements of new investments. Ontario needs to be a jurisdiction that attracts investment in order to help these families.
To assist you in this, if there is any additional information that I can provide to aid in the support of these men and women please let me know. I hope that we can work together to find a solution quickly to try and help the employees transition into new employment and attract new industry to our community.
Sincerely,
Ernie Hardeman, MPP
Oxford
